Fall desserts don’t get any better than this simple Apple Dump Cake recipe! With only a handful of ingredients, you are going to fall in love with this easy dump cake!

Apple Dump Cake Recipe - Apple Dump Cake Recipe with Canned Apples (1)

If you’ve ever wondered how to make apple dump cake, this easy Apple Dump Cake with cake mix is the answer! Full of fall flavor and super easy to make!

Are you on team apple or team pumpkin? If I’m being honest, I’m on both. When it comes to fall flavors, I love them ALL!

But it seems like apple gets overshadowed a little bit by pumpkin. As soon as the fall recipes start surfacing, I feel like I see apple for about 2 weeks. And then it’s “pumpkin this” and “pumpkin that” until Christmas.

So here I am, bringing you a recipe that glorifies the fall fruit the way that it deserves to be! And the best part about it? It’s as easy as pie…or dump cake, I guess!

Dump cakes have been really popular lately, and I decided to jump on the band wagon. As much as I love from-scratch desserts, sometimes it’s nice to have a dump-and-go recipe that only requires a few ingredients.

We usually go apple picking every year. I love having a bushel of fresh apples on hand for fall baking, plus it’s fun for the boys. Who am I kidding? Dave and I love it too! If you’ve never gone, I highly suggest it.

The only downfall to baking with fresh apples is that it’s a lot of work. You have to peel, core and slice them, and that can take quite a bit of time. Nothing quick can be made with fresh apples, that’s for sure.

Since I’ve had baby boy number 3, I have been all about easy meals, and that includes desserts! I especially love this apple dump cake because it uses apple pie filling. That means no peeling, cutting and slicing apples! I love homemade stuff for sure, but you just can’t beat a dessert that 1. kids can easily help you with, 2. doesn’t dirty up your kitchen to make and 3. is ready to go in the oven in under 5 minutes.

It also uses a boxed cake mix. That means no measuring flour, sugar, etc. Can it really get any easier than that? I don’t think so! Dump cakes are a dime a dozen on the internet, usually using boxed yellow cake mix. I wanted to mix this up a little bit, so I used a cinnamon crumb coffee cake mix with a cinnamon brown sugar topping for this. It was AMAZING. I used the Krusteaz’s branded mix- it should be readily available at any grocery store.

There aren’t many things that I make that my family doesn’t like, but this one was particularly loved by all of them. I made this apple dump cake on a Friday night, and it was completely devoured by the end of the weekend! I’d call that a win.

We like to serve ours with a big scoop of vanilla ice cream, but it would be great with whipped cream, or even on it’s own.

Recipe Tips:

  • As stated above, I used the Krusteaz’s Cinnamon Swirl Crumb Cake mix. It is VERY similar looking to my Cinnamon Coffee Cake recipe. It was deliciously sweet with the topping, but if you wanted to tone it down a little, you could easily only use half the topping provided in the box.
  • I used a Comstock filling that was “more fruit, more like homemade.” I used two cans of it for this recipe, but I’m also really curious to know how it would work to slice up 2-3 fresh apples, then top with one can of filling and proceed on? I’m definitely all about the fruit filling when it comes to desserts like crisps, crumbles, cobblers and pies, so I think this could be a great way to beef up the apple layer of the dessert without overloading it with sugar. Just a thought.

FAQs

What is the biggest mistake to avoid when making a dump cake? ›

However, anyone well-versed in the ways of the dump cake will tell you that there is one rule you should never break when making a dump cake. Since it's not a step that you'll ever see in most other cake recipes, it can be easily missed. The mistake to avoid is simple: Don't mix it.

Can you use eating apples instead of cooking apples in a cake? ›

You can use any eating apples that are in season, or any that you have to hand, but my favourites are Cox's Orange Pippins and Braeburn apples for flavour.

Why is my dump cake still powdery? ›

If you've baked your dump cake and there's still cake mix powder on the top, it's likely because the butter wasn't evenly distributed on top of the cake. When assembling your dump cake recipe, be sure to spread the cake mix in a thin even layer and space the pats of butter evenly across the top.

Why does my apple cake fall apart? ›

There are two main reasons why an apple cake would fall apart: (1) it was simply too warm when you were trying to cut and serve it or (2) you used too many/the wrong kind of apple. See notes above about picking and choosing the best kinds of apples for a recipe like this.

How to tell when dump cake is done? ›

Sprinkle the cake mix over the top of the fruit. Slice the butter into tablespoons and distribute evenly over the surface of the cake mix. Bake until the tops are brown and bubbly, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Serve with whipped cream.

What are the three common causes of failure in cakes? ›

We've provided an in-depth explanation of these three crumbly cake culprits.
  • Overbaked. If your oven temp is too high, you will bake the cake past 212 degrees Fahrenheit, which is the temperature where water evaporates. ...
  • Undermixed. ...
  • Too Much Flour.

What is the best apple to use in a cake? ›

Bon Appetit says the best apples for baking are Jonagold, Honeycrisp, Braeburn, Mutsu, Winesap, Pink Lady (Cripps Pink) but they also use Granny Smith often. They've listed several apples that have already been mentioned that are crisp and either sweet or tart.

What 4 apples are best used for baking? ›

For the best pies, crisps, and other baked treats, apples need to be firm enough to hold their own during the cooking process. We call these apples “baking apples” and to namedrop, they include Braeburn, Cortland, Honey Gold, Jonathan, Fuji, Gala, Granny Smith, Haralson, and Newtown Pippin.

Should dump cake be gooey? ›

Once baked, a dump cake comes out like a cross between fluffy cake and melty cobbler. Soft ooey-gooey bars come to mind, except more scoopable. Many people choose to use store-bought pie filling or canned fruit as the base, but you can really customize it to fit your taste.

Can you leave a dump cake out overnight? ›

No, you do not have to refrigerate Apple Dump Cake. It can be safely stored at room temperature for up to 2 days in an airtight container. I suggest refrigerating the dump cake, however, to prolong its freshness. Refrigerated dump can stay fresh for up to 4 days in the refrigerator.

Do dump cakes really work? ›

Besides the cringe-worthy name, most dump cakes are way too sweet and can be kind of a one-note experience. Using canned pie filling and cake mix also means loads of preservatives and who knows what else going into your cake. Also, sometimes when you just "dump" things into a pan, they don't always bake evenly.

How do you keep apples from sinking in a cake? ›

The best way to avoid sinking fruit is to toss the fruit in a couple of tablespoons of the flour (just use some from the measured amount for the recipe) to coat it lightly. Once added to the cake mixture the flour coating will thicken the batter immediately surrounding the fruit and help suspend the fruit.

How do you fix a dry apple cake after baking? ›

Soak your cake in milk or cream.

Simply brush on a few tablespoons of milk or cream to the top of your dry cake or, for a truly indulgent finish, follow recipes like one-bowl tres leches poke cake, baked and soaked in a combination of whole milk, evaporated milk, and sweetened condensed milk.

Why does my fruit always sink to the bottom of my cake? ›

The light flour coating helps the fruit to 'stick' to the cake mixture better, stopping them from sinking. If you are using fruit such as glace cherries or larger fruits such as apple, you will need to halve or quarter them before dusting with flour, as if left whole they will be too large and will sink.

What are the common errors in cake making? ›

  • Your ingredients are at the wrong temperature. ...

What causes a cake to collapse after baking? ›

Cakes sink in the middle due to several reasons. One reason is that the cake batter might be too moist, causing it to collapse during baking. Another reason could be that the oven temperature is too low, leading to uneven baking. Opening the oven door too frequently while baking can also cause cakes to sink.

Should dump cake be refrigerated? ›

Do you refrigerate dump cake? There's no dairy in this recipe, but we'd still recommend you refrigerate dump cake. It'll help it last longer in the fridge. Cover the dish in plastic wrap, and store it in the fridge 4 to 5 days.
