Is IU Bloomington prestigious? ›

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Indiana University Bloomington has ranked highly in the recently released U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities rankings for 2024-25. Of the 2,250 universities ranked worldwide, IU Bloomington ranked 135th overall for global impact, the highest of the ranked universities in Indiana.

Every degree program has different requirements for taking the pass/fail option—check your school's academic bulletin for details. Most pass/fail courses are electives. If you want to take a class as pass/fail, you'll need to get a pass/fail option form from your academic advisor.

Academic Policies

Full-Time/Part-Time Status: Indiana University students are considered full time when they are enrolled in 12 or more credit hours of course work; students enrolled in fewer than 12 credit hours are considered part-time students. A typical full-time load is approximately 15 credit hours.

A typical academic load is 14 to 16 credit hours per term. Students wishing to register for more than 19 credit hours in a given term should have a cumulative program grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or above. To enroll in more than 19 credit hours, students must see a Kelley academic advisor for authorization.

First-year applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.

The Operations Management (K201) and Business Analytics (K303) courses are frequently mentioned as being challenging. In the science departments, Organic Chemistry (C342) is also notoriously known for being tough due to its conceptual complexity and the volume of memorization involved.

Passing Grade: A, B, C, or D (including pluses and minuses).

If you fail a class in college, this will impact your grade-point average (GPA). Failing a class causes the grade point to 'zero' out, which will impact the average of other numerical grades (an A grade is the equivalent of 4 points, B being 3 points, and so on).

You're required to live on campus your first year for a good reason: students who live in our residence halls do better in class, are more involved on campus, and are more likely to graduate. A student who is working on an undergraduate degree that requires 120 to 128 credit (unit) hours for completion of requirements should expect to complete 15 or 16 credit (unit) hours during regular semesters in order to complete degree requirements in eight semesters.

Three credit units require students to work on that course for about 135 hours (45x3) in some combination of class/instructional time and independent time.
