Is Acuvue Oasys being discontinued? ›

Effective March 8th, 2024, diagnostic lenses will be discontinued. ACUVUE® OASYS with Transitions™ will remain available for purchase while supplies last until June 30th, 2024, when the product will be fully discontinued.

Blackout contacts work by blocking the vision in one eye, essentially turning off the input from that eye to the brain. This prevents the brain from receiving two conflicting images, thus eliminating double vision. In medical terms, this is known as occlusion therapy.

Photochromic contact lenses darken in the sunlight and offer UV protection, but they don't provide UV 400 coverage, which is the highest level. The contacts are made using photochromic molecules, spread across the surface of the lenses.

It was called Frontier Contact Lenses. Johnson & Johnson renamed it Vistakon, and later it became a division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care.

In 1987, Johnson & Johnson introduced the first mass-marketed disposable contact lens under the brand Acuvue—and the rest, as they say, is history. Each and every day, Johnson & Johnson's Visioncare plant in Limerick, Ireland, manufactures millions of Acuvue contact lenses for markets around the globe.

A key difference between the 2 lenses is their water content and oxygen permeability. ACUVUE 2 boasts a moderately high water content at 58%, which is higher than ACUVUE OASYS' 38%. Higher water content tends to be associated with high oxygen permeability, which in turn correlates with improved eye comfort and health.
