MATHES Devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend, was born in St. Paul, Minnesota and attended the University of Minnesota, where he studied aeronautical engineering.

In 1939 he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps where he was a member of the 41-G flight class, Carl and his wife, Gerry, were married in 1942 at Randolph Field, Texas and they shared over 60 happy years before she preceded him in death in February, 2003.Throughout the War, Carl served as a flight instructor and in 1946 he joined U.S. Steel and was eventually transferred to Atlanta where the Mathes family has resided for over 40 years. Carl sold industrial fence and was known for his good humor and his high standards. He is remembered for always having a smile, a good story and an engaging laugh.

After retirement in 1978, Carl and Gerry built a home on the 17th hole at Fairfield Plantation and enjoyed over a decade of golfing, bridge and good times. Carl loved nearly all sports. He also loved puttering around his yard and pool. Gerry was a pianist and Carl loved to sing and his family and friends remember many evenings.
